ISTA Laboratory Speyer
Seed testing in Rhineland-Palatinate
The samples taken by the chambers of agriculture of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland or the seed marketing control offices in those two Länder are, as a matter of principle, tested by the Agricultural Testing and Research Agency in Speyer. Samples taken by private customers are also tested.
The testing does not only focus on the determination of purity, moisture, health, vigour and germination capacity but also on genetically modified seeds. The testing for genetically modified seeds is, however, conducted by a second unit that belongs to the feedstuffs department.
Traditional seed testing is currently carried out by three staff members.
In 1953, the seed testing laboratory became a member of ISTA and all testing is based on ISTA methods. The laboratory is also subject to external ISTA quality audits.
In addition, the laboratory staff participates in the interlaboratory tests conducted by the seeds section of the Association of German Agricultural Testing and Research Institutes (VDLUFA). By participating in the seeds section and other workshops, the quality of the analytical procedures applied is examined and maintained and new staff members are adequately trained.
